Specimen Requirements
Formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded tissue block or cell block, or 1 unstained charged slide for each test requested plus 3-4 additional unstained slides cut at 4 microns. Adequate space on each slide for control tissue is required.
Diagnostic Utility
NUT immunohistochemistry is a highly sensitive and specific method for detecting NUT midline carcinomas (NMC), a group of highly aggressive and frequently lethal tumors that were mainly reported in the head and neck and mediastinum (upper aerodigestive tract) regions. It is an excellent surrogate immunohistochemistry marker for the FISH assay in demonstrating NUT gene rearrangement on chromosome 15q14, using the NUT split-apart probes.
