In Cancer, Vol 86, #11, pp. 2426 (December 1999), Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions reported on 6,171 second opinion reviews of outside cases resulting in 86 changed diagnoses. Of the 86 changed, 93% altered the treatment plan and 94% modified the prognosis. Clearly, studies suggest that second opinion pathology evaluations are cost-effective. They not only prevent errors but may save lives, emotional stress, lost work time, and costly treatments.
